Boxing promoter Bob Arum believes that Mike Tyson should consider himself lucky not to have been born in the same era as Tyson Fury.
Mike Tyson, a legendary boxer, still holds the record for being the youngest heavyweight champion when he defeated Trevor Berbick and won the world title in November 1986 at the age of 20 years and 145 days.
Known for his exceptional speed and devastating punching power, Tyson has often sent his opponents to the canvas with quick knockouts. The world has admired Tyson, with even current heavyweight champion Tyson Fury considering him an idol. However, boxing promoter Bob Arum has a different opinion.
Arum told talkSPORT, “He (Fury) is named after the famous heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson. You know, fans love those special fights. If both fighters were at their peak, Tyson Fury against Mike Tyson, what would the result be? Well, there’s nothing to it. Tyson Fury would defeat Mike, he is far superior. What would Mike Tyson do, jump up to knock out Fury?”
The renowned boxing promoter further added, “Heavyweight fighters nowadays are taller and more agile, something that didn’t exist before. Heavyweight fighters like Mike Tyson wouldn’t be able to compete. I always feel that if Mike Tyson stepped into the ring with George Foreman (6’3″), who is 11cm taller, Tyson would also be knocked out.”
The 90-year-old man who was once a bridge to creating some of the world’s greatest boxing matches believes that Mike “Iron” Tyson is lucky not to have been born in the same era as Tyson Fury.
Similar to tennis, modern boxers are getting taller and larger. Anthony Joshua (6’6″), Deontay Wilder (6’7″), and especially Fury, who stands at an impressive 6’9″, pose significant disadvantages for a 5’11” Mike Tyson when competing against these true “giants.”
At the age of 56, Mike Tyson made a comeback to the ring to face Roy Jones Jr., a fellow former champion in their weight class. The exhibition match ended in a draw after 8 rounds (November 2020). Tyson is also considering a future fight against Logan Paul, a boxer and YouTuber who previously fought to a draw with Floyd Mayweather (June 2021).
Facing a non-professional boxer like Logan Paul may be more suitable for Mike Tyson than competing against current heavyweight stars.
